2016 RIO OLYMPICS: Puig Wins Singles Gold Over Kerber; Kvitova Beats Keys For Bronze


Monica Puig of Puerto Rico pulled off one of the incredible upsets in sports by defeating not one or two major champions but three on her way to winning the women's singles Gold Medal in Rio. Puig, rated in the mid 90s at the beginning of the year defeated 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, 2-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and 2016 Australian Open champ Angie Kerber.

By winning the Gold medal match 6-4 4-6 6-2, Puig won the very first Gold medal for Puerto Rico. Kvitova won the Bronze medal match by outlasting American Madison Keys 7-5 2-6 6-2.

Best storyline of the Olympics, regardless of what might happen in the 2nd week.
Monica's gold medal was just an amazing show of skill and tenacity.
She and Del Potro should go on a tour for the entire tennis world to enjoy - they truly can win, and have emotions to show for it.
And Jack Sock's gold medal winning smile - where is the toothpaste company willing to pay him for it?

Yes, I agree Monica Puig's performance was extraordinary. Interesting to see that she and Keys are contemporaries. It's not always the person who breaks out first who has the bigger career but it is indicative of SOMETHING.

I wonder if Del o will be playing for old in Tokyo? I suspect that will be Kei's to lose...
