LGBT and political circles are buzzing with news of Assemblyman Mark Leno's decision to challenge State Senator Carole Migden in the June 2008 Democratic primary election. Both are openly gay politicians currently representing the City of San Francisco. Leno is termed out in 2008 while Migden has atleast one more term left in the State Senate, and possibly more if voters approve the proposed term limits amendment on the proposed February 5th statewide presidential primary election.
Today, Mark Leno is officially kicking off his campaign to win the 3rd State Senatorial District Democratic Party nomination with a public rally in Yerba Buena Park.
Deciding between these two effective, highly successful legislators will be an extremely difficult choice. Senator Migden carried the very first domestic partnership bill, has served on the statewide Board of Equalization and the second lesbian elected to the Assembly. Assemblymember Leno was the first gay man elected to the Assembly and carried the marriage equality bill which passed the Legislature but was vetoed by the Governator.
