World #1 and current Roland Garros champion Justine Henin beat current Wimbledon champion Venus Williams 7-6(2), 6-4 in an uneven women's semifinal at the 2007 US Open, three days after eliminating current Australian Open champion Serena Williams 7-6(4), 6-1 in a powerful display of versatile tennis.
In the other women's soon-to-be World #2 Svetlana Kuznetsova beat soon-to-be World #5 Anna Chakvetadze 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in an error-prone, scratchy match marred by tricky weather conditions and nervous play from both players.
Henin is 14-2 head-to-head against Kuznetsova and beat the Russian 6-4, 6-4 in a 2006 Roland Garros final which was not as close as the score indicates. It should be noted that Kuznetsova did win their last encounter, on clay in Berlin in a tough 3-sets and won the 2004 US Open. However, Justine won the 2003 US Open and was in the 2006 US Open final and is the prohibitive favorite to win her 7th major title overall (a total one ahead of Venus, one behind Serena) today.
