San Francisco (January 14, 2010) -- In response to the destruction following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck the Caribbean island nation of Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, Rainbow World Fund (RWF) is launching a Haiti Earthquake Relief Campaign.
Background: Many buildings have collapsed and thousands of dead are lying in the streets. Currently there is no official death toll, but thousands have been injured, hundreds of thousands are now homeless, and many remain unaccounted for. Water and power services are out due to severe damage to Haiti's already fragile infrastructure. The survivors are in immediate need of food, safe drinking water, and medical care.
RWF in Haiti: Since 2004, Rainbow World Fund has supported ongoing projects in Haiti focusing on improving nutrition and developing access to safe drinking water. We have helped improve the lives of thousands of Haitians.
Response: Rainbow World Fund is working with CARE, our long term disaster relief partner, which is already on the ground providing emergency food, safe water, plastic for shelter, blankets, and basic medicines. 100% of donations to RWF for Haiti will go to these life saving services. RWF is starting the fund off with an initial donation of $50,000, which it hopes to see multiplied by the generosity of the LGBT and friends community.
