SHOCKER! Haas Stuns Federer in Halle Final

In one of the most improbable results of the year, Tommy Haas of Germany, beat World #3 Roger Federer in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, 7-6(5) 6-4. Haas, 34, had lost nine consecutive matches to Federer and the 16-time major champion also had a 49-match winning streak against players from Germany. Federer was going for his 75th ATP tour title and record 6th title in Halle, while Haas was going for his second in Halle (and 13th overall), having won the title before in 2009. Federer was playing in his 7th final in Halle, having previously lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the 2010 final and  had won the tournament in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006,

Federer has only lost on grass a handful of times in the last 9 years (2011 Wimbledon quarterfinal to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinal to Tomas Berdych, 2010 Halle final to Hewitt, 2008 Wimbledon final to Rafael Nadal and now this 2012 final loss to Haas). Federer won Wimbledon in  2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008.

This year's Wimbledon starts on Monday June 25th and the London Olympics will also be played on grass in late July at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club. Hopefully, this loss does not bode badly for Roger's chances in both tournaments. The last time Haas won Halle (in 2009), he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, where he lost to (you guessed it!) Roger Federer.
