2013 AUS OPEN Day 1 & 2: No Big Upsets
The first two days of the "Happy Slam" are complete and basically all the top contenders are still happy, though 4-time Australian Open champ Serena Williams could not have been happy that she rolled her ankle during her 1st round win where she did not lose a single game.
Other seeded winners on the women's side include 2012 Australian Open champion Vika Azarenka, 2012 French Open champion Maria Sharapova, Aggie Radwanska, Angelique Kerber and Li Na. In surprising upsets, World #7 Sara Errani and #12 seed Nadia Petrova both lost.
Exciting matches of the day included 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm beating Petrova, becoming the oldest woman to ever reach the 2nd round of the Australian Open. In two surprise (non)upsets Caroline Wozniaki dismissed Sabine Lisicki and 2011 Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova did not lose to 2010 French Open champ Francesca Schiavone.
On the men's side, the usual suspects 2-time defending champion Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, David Ferrer all won. In fact, the only seeds to fall in the first two says were #11 seed Juan Monaco, #18 seed Aleksandr Dologopolov and #19 seed Tommy Haas.
Dolopolov lost to Gael Monfils despite the attractive Frenchman playing his first grand slam match in well over 6 months, and reminding people of just how exciting it is to see La Monf's 6'4" frame flying around a tennis court, especially for fur sets.
In other exciting matches on the men's side Fernnado Verdasco outlasted David Goffin 6-4 in the 5th set, Janko Tipsarevic mos likely ended Rusty Hewitt's tennis career in Melbourne in straight sets and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat his doubles partner and good friend Michel Llodra in impressive fashion.
