Now There Are 8: PA Sen. Casey Supports Marriage

Well, well! On Saturday I blogged about the nine remaining members of the Democratic caucus in the United States that have failed to announce their support for marriage equality. oday that number fell to eight, with pro-life Bob Casey, Jr., Democrat of Pennsylvania, announcing that since he believes DOMA should be repealed, he feels also that marriage should be legalized for same-sex couples as well:

"I ultimately decided that to make a decision about DOMA was making a decision about marriage equality itself," Casey said.

Casey's public switch comes less than a week after the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in two landmark gay marriage cases.

In a statement Casey said he wrote over several days, the senator asks, "If two people of the same sex fall in love and want to marry, why would our government stand in their way? At a time when many Americans lament a lack of commitment in our society between married men and women, why would we want lesscommitment and fewer strong marriages?"

If you're keeping score at home, that is now 48 members of the 100-member United States Senate that have publicly announced their support for marriage equality: 45 Democrats, 2 Independents (Vermont's Bernie Sanders and Maine's Angus King) along with 1 Republican (Ohio's Rob Portman).

When will a majority of the Senate support marriage equality? Will it happen before or after the Supreme Court rules in the DOMA and the Prop 8 cases?
