MADRID 2013: Azarenka Loses 1st Match of 2013! Now 18-1.

Ekaterina Makarova earned what some are calling the biggest win of her career by becoming the first player this year to defeat 2013 Australian Open champion and Word #3 Victoria Azarenka at the Mutua Madrid Open 1-6 6-2 6-3. Azarenka first loss in 19 matches came the day after 2013 Australian Open champion and World #1 Novak Djokovic was upset by 21-year-old Grigor Dimitrov in a 3-hour-5-minute 3-set thriller.

Makarova is best known for (what I would say is the biggest win of her career) her defeat of 5-time Australian Open defending champion Serena Williams in the 4th round of the 2012 Australian Open. She ended Azarenka's 2013 winning streak at 18 while the Belarussian destroyed her racquet (twice) and screamed at the umpire. Last year, Azarenka lost in the final to Serena at the Madrid Open. This year she did not play the Indian Wells or Miami tournaments due to an ankle injury.
