TENNIS TUESDAY: Hewitt Beats Federer; France Wins Hopman Cup

The first tournament finals of the year happened this weekend. The most significant was Lleyton Hewitt's 6-1 4-6 6-3 win over Roger Federer in the Brisbane International final. This was a significant result for multiple reasons. First, because it was Federer's first appearance in a final since last year's loss to Juan Martin del Potro in Basel. Second, because Federer has had a 15-match winning streak against Hewitt, but he has now lost two consecutive finals to the former World #1 (Halle 2010 and Brisbane 2014). It is Hewitt's 29th ATP tour title.

It wasn't all bad news for the Swiss. World #8 Stanislas Wawrinka defended his title in Chennai, India.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Alize Cornet won the 2014 Hopman Cup for France by defeating the Polish team which featured Agniezka Radwanska 2-1 by winning the mixed doubles match.

In other tournaments this weekend, Rafael Nadal beat Gael Monfils to win the Qatar Total Open 6-1 6-7(5) 6-2 in Doha. Nadal now has 61 ATP Tour titles, which is #8 on the all-time list. Just one behind Guillermo Vilas (62) but more notably just two behind Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg who are tied at #5.
