Despite my predictions to the contrary,
Novak Djokovic and
Flavia Pennetta won the 2014 Indian Wells titles. The 33rd meeting between
Roger Federer and Djokovic was a squeaker, with the younger player pulling out the victory in a 3rd set tiebreak,
3-6 6-3 7-6(3), after being easily outmatched in the first set. Federer's 11-match winning streak came to an end with his loss but he still leads his overall head-to-head with Djokovic 17-16.
The women's final was disappointing because a clearly injured
Agnieska Radwanska was not able to put up much resistance to allow Pennetta
to win the biggest title of her career. Djokovic won his 42nd career ATP Tour title and 17th ATP Masters shield.
Pennetta will rise to #12 in the rankings and Federer will return to #5.
