2014 FRENCH OPEN: Serena-Venus Meeting Avoided When Both Lose!

Quelle Horreur! Serena Williams (defending champion) and Venus Williams were scheduled to play their 25th WTA Tour match in the 3rd round of the 2014 French Open but instead both lost their second round matches. The two last played last year in Charleston and Serena won and leads their head-to-head 14-10.

The most puzzling result today was Serena's 2-6 2-6 lost to Gabine Muguruza, the hard-hitting 20-year-old from Spain. The World #1 hit a measly eight winners in the entire match and lost in a little over an hour, being broken 5 times in a row. The total of 4 games won is Serena's lowest in 288 grand slam matches she has played!

Serena stepped on the court as her sister was down 3-5 in the 3rd set and that may have affected her state of mind in the beginning of the match. But Venus eventually lost 6-2 3-6 4-6 to a talented 19-year-old from Slovakia named Anna Schmiedlova.

Serena also lost a curious match earlier this year to Alize Cornet in straight sets one round before the two sisters would have met in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Open, which Venus ended up winning.

The two have lost on the same day before: 4th Round Wimbledon 2011 and 3rd Round of the 2008 French Open.
