Today the United States celebrates a federal holiday in honor of
Martin Luther King, Jr! MLK was a leader in the civil rights movement of the 60s which resulted in massive improvements in conditions for African-Americans and other non-white people as the United States was forced to recognize that it was not living up to the idea of "equal justice under law." This struggle continues today, in various ways.
