To be fair I don't believe any President has had a high approval rating at this juncture of their tenure in office.Furthermore, Americans are an impatient lot. Just because Obama couldn't come right in and: fix the economy, end gay discrimination, and the war in Iraq (therefore guaranteeing a modern day utopian society)he's now public enemy number one. I never labored under any delusions that this would be swift transformation back to prosperity. Obama made it clear in his inaugural address that the rode would be long and arduous.
He is losing support from his base because he: 1) Promised openness, but he has refused to release information. 2) Promised to be a fierce advocate for gay rights, but filed a brief -- a particularly nasty brief -- in defense of the Defense of Marriage Act. 3) Said that he would fight for a Public Option for healthcare, but since then he said that the Public Option is but a "tiny sliver" of the entire healthcare reform initiative, and then he made a secret deal with the pharmaceutical companies. 4) Has accelerated the war in Afghanistan.
He continues to grovel at the feet of and make concessions to the Republicans, but this strategy of his will never win any Republican support and it loses Democratic support.
