U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano sent out a statement today confirming what we have known since Saturday's news of a case down in Florida that was publicized by the DOMA project. As a result of the Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. Windsor, legally married same-sex couples will be able to file "green card petitions" to obtain permanent resident status (and eventual citizenship) for their foreign spouses in same-sex binational relationships.
This is the text of the Secretary's statement is today's Queer Quote:
“After last week’s decision by the Supreme Court holding that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, President Obama directed federal departments to ensure the decision and its implication for federal benefits for same-sex legally married couples are implemented swiftly and smoothly. To that end, effective immediately, I have directed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to review immigration visa petitions filed on behalf of a same-sex spouse in the same manner as those filed on behalf of an opposite-sex spouse.”The full impact of last week's Supreme Court rulings in the Gaytterdämmerung cases will be felt in these simple, bureaucratic moves by different levels of government. That is what the real fight in the kulturkampf is all about. To have life being LGBT just as boring and inconsequential as people who are not LGBT. Or to paraphrase a Martin Luther King quote, "to judge people by the content of their character, not their sexual orientation."
