Olympiad XXX: Jamaica Wins 4x100 Relay (36.48s)!

The Jamaican 4x100 relay team of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter won the Gold medal in the event with a stunning time of 36.84 seconds, a new world record, averaging 9.21 seconds per leg, which is far faster than either Bolt or Blake ran the 100m in their medal-winning performances earlier in the week!

The Jamaican team beat the Americans' time of 37.04 (equalling an American record) and even though the Canadian team crossed the finish line third, their team was disqualified because Jared Connaughton stepped on the lane boundary, which was only discovered during the official video playback review after the team was celebrating their Bronze medal finish! So Trinidad and Tobago was awarded the Bronze medal, completing an outstanding track and field event for Caribbean-based teams.

Olympiad XXX: Bolt Wins 200m Gold, Cements Iconic Status

Usain Bolt became the first man ever to win the 100m and 200m races in two consecutive Olympics, proving his iconic status as the greatest sprinter of all. His time of 19.32 beat out his countryman Yohan Blake's 19.44, who beat another Jamaican Warren Weir's time of 19.84. Thus Jamaica swept the 200m and only an American bronze medal performance by Justin Gatlin in the 100m prevented a double sweep of the most prestigious (and lucrative) races in athletics.

Former Olympic medal silver medalist for Trinidad and Tobago Ato Boldon was quoted by the New York Times as saying that Bolt's win "end[s] the debate about who is the  greatest sprinter in history."

Bolt has now won gold medals in the 100m (9.69s) and 200m(19.30s) at the Beijing Olympics and at the London Olympics. Might he continue his reign in Brazil at the Rio Olympics in 2016? He will only be 29 years old them. He currently holds the Olympic (9.69s) and world record (9.58s) in the 100m as well as the Olympic (19.30s) and world record ((19.19s) in the 200m. The 200m is widely considered his stronger event for the 6'5" phenom.

Olympiad XXX: Bolt Wins 100m Gold in 9.63s!

Usain Bolt of Jamaica repeated his Gold Medal finish in the 100 meter dash at the Beijing Olympics by doing so again at the XXX Olympiad in London, with a winning time of 9.63 seconds, slower than his world record of 9.58 seconds, but  faster than his winning time of 9.69 seconds from four years ago.

Second was Yohan Blake (also of Jamaica) in  a personal best time of 9.75 second, while American Justin Gatlin edged countryman (and former World Record holder) Tyson Gay 1/100th of a second to win the Bronze medal with a time of 9.79s.

Celebrity Friday (bonus): Djokovic Wins Laureus Award

Novak Djokovic won the prestigious Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award last week.

Djokovic has his sights on even bigger prizes:
Novak Djokovic says that he would like to win both Roland Garros and the Olympic gold medal this summer. "Why not both?" the Serbian said after winning the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award.
Djokovic, who led Serbia to its first Davis Cup triumph in 2010, has won the Australian Open three times and Wimbledon and the U.S. Open once each. He has yet to reach the final of Roland Garros. Djokovic won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The last player to win all four majors and an Olympic gold was Steffi Graf, who won the Golden Slam in 1988. The London Olympics begin three weeks after Wimbledon.
"I've learned how to handle my schedule, how to handle myself on and off the court and to prepare for the biggest events. That is going to be the case this year," Djokovic said. "I will try to set up my form for Roland Garros first of all, where I want to get the title and go all the way through, and then I'll start thinking about Wimbledon and the Olympics."
Serena Williams has won a record 3 Laureus Sportswoman of the Year awards, Roger Federer has won 4. It should be interesting to see how many Djokovic wins. It's looking like he may really be able to repeat his astonishing 2011 tennis performance (70 wins 6 losses 3 major titles) in 2012.

Teenager Wins 400m Gold Medal for Grenada

Kirani James, left, beat World Champion LaShawn Merritt at the tape in the 400m

Somehow I missed this amazing story from two weeks ago. An 18-year-old boy named Kirani James from my home island countryof Grenada (which has a population of just over 100,000 people, smaller than most cities in the United States) won the 400m gold at the recent World Track and Field Championships by beating an Olympic champion in the event!

But that was not the only amazing story of this 400 meter race. Another Grenadian runner, Rondell Bartholomew, placed sixth and there were twin brothers from Belgium that finished 3rd and 5th!

The Guardian has a great article on the race:

It takes something special to steal the headlines from an Olympic champion who has just returned from a 21-month ban because he accidentally ingested steroids while taking penis-enlargement pills. And Kirani James did just that. He beat LaShawn Merritt, who returned to the track after his suspension in July, in one of the great 400m races in the history of the world championships. James turns 19 on Saturday and his life is never going to be the same again.
If James's name had not been noted before he ran in Daegu, that is hardly surprising. The world 400m champion has run only four professional races in his career, three of them in the past three days. People who like easy labels are already calling him the new Usain Bolt but that does not quite fit. He is neither as flamboyant nor as fast. The first of those differences is not going to change but the second surely will.
The race had the kind of finish that is going to be rerun in the highlights reels for years to come. Merritt came into the home straight with a lead but James ran him down with 50 metres to go. The two were shoulder to shoulder as they came up to the line but James got himself half a stride in front and won by three hundredths of a second, despite Merritt's despairing dip of the head. His winning time of 44.60sec was a personal best, though it is unlikely to be so for long. The Belgian Kevin Borlée took bronze, completing a colourful cast of medal winners. His identical twin, Jonathan, was fifth.
James comes from Grenada and is their first world championship medallist. When he was 16 he was running the 400m in 45.24, a time that would easily have been good enough to earn a place in the final here.
Now, that is great writing, and a great story. Congratulations, Kirani! (About those Belgian Borlée twins, expect to see them again on this blog in the near future, as either Eye Candy or Celebrity Friday).

Gay Beats Bolt In 100m in Stockholm

Well! For the first time, American Tyson Gay has beaten Jamaican phenom Usain Bolt in the 100m. It happened yesterday at a race in Stockholm, Sweden. Bolt, the World and Olympic record holder had not been beaten in over two years and over two dozen races. Gay won in 9.84while Bolt was second with 9.97, well below what he ran a month ago (9.82) or his reigning world record time of 9.58.

Serena Williams Wins Record 3rd Laureus Award

Serena Williams won her 3rd career Laureus World Sports Award in Dubai on Wednesday after she was named Laureus Sportswoman of the Year for 2009, 7 years after she won her first. In 2007, she won the Laureus Comeback Award, bringing her total to three, the most won by a female. Only Roger Federer, who has four, has won more. Federer was up for Sportsman of the Year for 2009 but lost to Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who won his second Laureus Award. Kim Clijsters won the Laureus Comeback Award.

Serena said:
"I am just so delighted to win this Award, but very disappointed I cannot be in Abu Dhabi to say thank you in person. It's my third Laureus Award which is amazing and I would like to say thank you to all the Academy Members who voted for me and to the world's media who nominated me. Last year had its ups and downs, so to get this support is fantastic.

"As a tennis player you look at the amazing names of the Academy Members - like John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Boris Becker and Monica Seles - who have won so many Grand Slams and they know what it takes to do that. There is nothing better in sport than being acknowledged by the people that you looked up to when you were a young player.

"The Laureus Awards have been a constant reflection of my career, winning in 2003 and 2007, and I think I was also nominated four more times. I know only Roger Federer has more Awards, so it would be cool to catch him up.

"I've had a few injury problems over the years, so it's been great to get back to the top and be World No 1 again. It's going to be an interesting year with Justine Henin back, but I'm playing well and it was great to win in Australia, and I still want to win every tournament I play. It's going to be a very exciting 2010."
Congratulations, Serena!

Usain Bolt Breaks 200M World Record (Again)!

Following up on his stunning 9.58s turn in the 100m dash earlier in the week at the World Championships in Berlin, 22-year-old Jamaican track and field sensation Usain Bolt broke his own world record in the 200m by running a ridiculous 19.19s, again .11s better than the previous world record.

Bolt humiliated the field, winning by .62s ahead of second-place Alonso Edward of Panama (19.81s) and the pulchritudinous Wallace Spearmon of the United States (19.85s).

In his last 5 championship races, Usain Bolt has set 5 world records.

Usain Bolt DESTROYS 100M World Record: 9.58s!

Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sprinter who won the 100m and 200m Gold medals in world record time (19.30s and 9.69s) at the Beijing Olympics one year ago shattered his own record in the 100m dash with a staggering 9.58s run yesterday at the World Championships in Berlin. See the video above.

Tyson Gay, the top American sprinter, ran a career-best 9.71s, the third-fastest time in history, but even that time would not have beaten Bolt's time from last year, and was nowhere close to the Jamaican 22-year-old's stunning mark of 9.58s, a full .11 second faster than the previous world record. The largest delta (or change) in the history of digital record keeping which began in 1977.

Usain Bolt Wins Olympic 200m in World Record Time

Jamaican track and field phenom Usain Bolt won the 200 meter dash at the Beijing Olympics in world record time of 19.30secs, a few days after winning the 100m in a world record of 9.69secs. He becomes the first man to win the 100-200 double since the legendary Carl Lewis did it at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and the first to do so with world record times in both events.
In the 200m he broke Michael Johnson's 1996 Atlanta record of 19.32secs which many people had thought would last longer than a mere 12 years.
