College Football Star Comes Out; Likely To Become 1st Openly Gay NFL Player
The New York Times has a video interview with Sam:Sam led the SEC with 11.5 sacks, and 19 tackles for a loss. Most NFL draft projections see him as a likely mid-round pick, with some saying Sam could go as high as the third round, with a possible position switch to outside linebacker. He is rated as the 12th-best outside pass rusher in the draft by ESPN Scouts Inc."I just want to go to the team who drafts me," he said, "because that team knows about me, knows that I'm gay, and also knows that I work hard. That's the team I want to go to."Sam said that despite some comments from current players, he doesn't anticipate difficulty gaining acceptance in an NFL locker room."Hopefully it will be the same like my locker room," he said. "It's a workplace. if you've ever been in a Division I or pro locker room, it's a business place. You want to act professional."Sam rejects the appalling slanders that sometimes have been hurled at gay men."I mean, people will talk about the stereotype of gays being in the locker room ... to me, I think that it's a little stereotyped that gay people are predators. It's just very offensive."

Former NFL Player Accused Of Assaulting Boyfriend
![]() |
| Kwame Harris, 30, played football for Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers |
The San Francisco Chronicle reports:
Ouch. 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds? That is a big guy. Geier had extensive injuries and needed facial surgeries after the incident. Harris is scheduled for trial in April.Former 49ers and Raiders tackle Kwame Harris faces charges that he assaulted his boyfriend at a Menlo Park restaurant after an argument involving soy sauce and underpants, San Mateo County prosecutors said Monday.Harris, 30, became angry with Dimitri Geier, 36, in August at Su Hong restaurant on Menlo Avenue, according to court documents.[...]Serrato said the men were romantically involved and previously had lived together. Geier, a resident of Los Angeles, was visiting Harris at the time of the altercation, said Craig Charles, Geier's attorney."They'd broken up and gotten back together a few times," Charles said. "It was not a formal relationship."During the restaurant argument, Harris accused Geier of stealing his underwear, Serrato said. Harris then tried to pull down Geier's pants, the prosecutor said."I guess he was trying to prove that he was wearing his underwear," Serrato said.Harris, 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, then pinned Geier (6-1, 220 pounds) against a plate-glass window and hit him several times in the face and head, Serrato said.
One of the key reasons why the story is so interesting to the public is that there has never been an openly gay male member of a professional sports team in the United States (basketball, baseball or football) even though everyone knows that they must exist and numerous players have come out (or been outed) after their professional sports days are over.
It's really just a question of when, not if, a professional player comes out, and then the question is how will the sport, and the public respond?

Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in over time to win that country's first World Cup. Paul the Octopus was right again, MadProfessah was not. Iniesta, above, scored the winning goal in the 116th minute of play.

World Cup Final Today: Spain v. The Netherlands
Today is the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Spain will be playing the Netherlands. Holland is undefeated in this year's tournament, while Spain has been one of the top 2 ranked teams in the world for the last three years (the other, Brazil was vanquished by the Dutch team in the quarterfinals). One week after I watched him win his 2nd Wimbledon title, Spaniard Rafael Nadal will be in the audience to watch his team, La Furia Roja battle for their first World Cup title. Only seven countries have won the World Cup since the quadrennial competition began in 1930 (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, and France) so today history will be made.
Yesterday, 2-time defending champion Spain was eliminated from the Davis Cup by France in the semifinals. Is this a harbinger of Spain's defeat in the World Cup? The world's most famous cephalopod, Paul the Octopus has chosen Spain as the winner over the Netherlands today. He has not been wrong in all of his predictions at this year's tournament. He also correctly picked Germany to defeat Uruguay in the third place (runner's up) match. Germany won with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory to seal an all-European sweep.
MadProfessah's prediction: Netherlands (2-1)
