Republican Congressman Charlie Dent told the Washington Post he now supports marriage equality:
"Life is too short to have the force of government stand in the way of two adults whose pursuit of happiness includes marriage.[...]"As a Republican, I value equality, personal freedom and a more limited role for government in our lives. I believe this philosophy should apply to the issue of marriage as well."Congressman Dent is one of the very few Republican federal officeholders who have publicly announced their support for marriage equality. The others are: U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-IL) and Congressman Mark Hanna (R-NY).
