Happy Juneteenth! Should It Be A National Holiday?

Today is Juneteenth, the day that African Americans have been celebrating the news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the legal ending of involuntary servitude (a.k.a. slavery) in the United States since 1865.

I was unaware until today that there is a campaign to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. I am very well aware that there is only one federal holiday (Independence Day on July 4th) between Memorial Day at the end of May and Labor Day on the first Monday of September. That's pretty rough going for people like me who work for the Federal Government.

Today  U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) introduced legislation to have the federal government recognize Juneteenth:

June 19, shortened to the unique date Juneteenth, has become the symbolic anniversary of the freeing of the slaves. The Juneteenth Independence Day observance would be similar to Flag Day or Arbor Day; institutions would not be closed, but the event would have national recognition.
"By observing this day, our nation will honor the role that Juneteenth has played in African American culture in Texas and throughout the country, and it will remind us that, in America, we are all blessed to live in freedom," Hutchison said in an e-mail.
Hutchison's staff, not authorized to be quoted by name, says the legislation is not controversial and they do not expect any opposition.
The bill is another step in a movement to bring Juneteenth into prominence. Forty-one states have passed bills establishing a state observance of Juneteenth, almost half of them since 2007.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, to declare that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free. General Order Number 3, as it's known, was read by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger. The declaration came more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which he issued Sept. 22, 1862, to take effect Jan. 1, 1863.
Hmmm, well I am glad that the process for federal recognition is moving along.

Where We Live: The "gayborhoods" of America

This is interesting! The real estate blog Trulia did an analysis of 2010 U.S. Census data which recorded in what geographical census tracts same-sex couples lived and overlaid it with median price per square foor for homes listed to come up with the list of the Top 10 "gayborhoods" in the U.S. by percentage of the neighborhood which is either male or female same-sex couples. One interesting thing to note is that of the Top 10 the only jurisdiction where same-sex couples can get legally married right now (or in 2010 when the data was from) is Provincetown, Massachusetts (although I suspect many of the California couples would have been married in the June 15-November 3, 2008 173-day window when marriage equality was legal in my home state).

To summarize
Just three neighborhoods — ProvincetownRehoboth Beach, and the Castro — are on both the men’s and women’s top lists. The top four women’s neighborhoods, including Provincetown, are in Massachusetts. But one of the biggest differences is that the top men’s neighborhoods are much gayer than the top women’s neighborhoods: just one women’s neighborhood breaks the 5% barrier, while five men’s neighborhoods have more than 10% same-sex male couples. Remember, there are roughly the same number of male and female couples in the U.S. So, that means that male couples are much more clustered in particular neighborhoods than female couples are: female couples are more likely to be the only ones on their block.

[...]

The gayest male neighborhoods are a mix of well-known urban neighborhoods (Castro,West Hollywood), less-well-known communities (Wilton Manors, FLPleasant Ridge, MI), and vacation areas (ProvincetownPalm SpringsRehoboth Beach).
Trulia also did an analysis of the gayborhoods in my hometown of Los Angeles:
The gay center of LA for men includes two zip codes in West Hollywood: roughly from Doheny Drive to Sweetzer (90069, $481) and from Sweetzer to La Brea (90046, $465), as well as the Hollywood Hills (90068, $410). By Los Angeles standards these are expensive areas, though New Yorkers might not think so. Much more affordable, and still very gay relative to the rest of the region, is Signal Hill (90755, $200), a small city surrounded by Long Beach, about 30 miles south of West Hollywood.

Long Beach also hosts the six neighborhoods with the highest concentrations of female couples in the LA area. The top three are Belmont Heights (90814, $278), Plaza / South of Conant (90808, $299), and Eastside (90804, $207) – all of which are far less expensive than West Hollywood.
Where do you live?

Maine Poll Shows Marriage Equality Ahead 55-36

The momentum in the battle to legalize marriage equality in Maine at the ballot box is with the pro-equality side as yet another poll shows that voters there are favorably disposed to supporting the measureA new poll from WBUR in Maine shows 55% say they favor "allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples that protects religious freedom by ensuring that no religion or clergy be required to perform such a marriage in violation of their religious beliefs" while only 36% say the oppose such a law. The margin of error in the poll is 4.4 points and 9% of respondents say they "don't know" or refuse to answer the question. The vast majority of such respondents are expected to oppose marriage equality

Unfortunately, the actual question on the November 2012 Maine voters will actually see is unlikely to be as detailed as in the poll. The Republican Secretary of State (who happens to be running for the United States Senate) has proposed that the ballot question be: "Do you want to allow same-sex couples to marry?"

This is an absolutely unacceptable version of the question because it doesn't even accurately reflect what the ballot measure would do. Same-sex couples can get "married" wherever they want; what people are asking for is for the state to end the prohibition on issuing civil marriage licenses to same-sex couples and for the state to recognize the legal validity of the civil marriages of same-sex couples just like the civil marriages of opposite-sex couples.

SHOCKER! Haas Stuns Federer in Halle Final

Getty
In one of the most improbable results of the year, Tommy Haas of Germany, beat World #3 Roger Federer in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, 7-6(5) 6-4. Haas, 34, had lost nine consecutive matches to Federer and the 16-time major champion also had a 49-match winning streak against players from Germany. Federer was going for his 75th ATP tour title and record 6th title in Halle, while Haas was going for his second in Halle (and 13th overall), having won the title before in 2009. Federer was playing in his 7th final in Halle, having previously lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the 2010 final and  had won the tournament in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006,

Federer has only lost on grass a handful of times in the last 9 years (2011 Wimbledon quarterfinal to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinal to Tomas Berdych, 2010 Halle final to Hewitt, 2008 Wimbledon final to Rafael Nadal and now this 2012 final loss to Haas). Federer won Wimbledon in  2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008.

This year's Wimbledon starts on Monday June 25th and the London Olympics will also be played on grass in late July at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club. Hopefully, this loss does not bode badly for Roger's chances in both tournaments. The last time Haas won Halle (in 2009), he reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, where he lost to (you guessed it!) Roger Federer.

Saturday Politics: Lopez Does The Math In AD-51

The official results in my local Assembly District primary election from Tuesday June 4th have been released and Jimmie Gomez placed first with 9,868 votes (37.5%) and my friend (and openly gay Latino activistLuis Lopez placed second with 6,496 votes (24.7%). Arturo Chavez was close behind with 6,081 votes (23.1%). The new Top 2 primary in California forces only the Top 2 finishers in the June primary election to appear on the November general election, regardless of party and prohibits write-ins. This was a very close, tightly fought all-Democratic primary fight.

This leads to some important mathematical calculations in the general election which are very different from the mathematical considerations which dominated the primary election. In the primary election, the clear goal was to not only maximize your own vote but also to minimize the vote of your most dangerous opponent, which could be achieved by the same activity, or by having votes that do not go to you NOT go to your opponent. In the general election, every vote not for you is a vote for your opponent, it is a zero-sum game.

In AD-51, the candidate endorsed by the "establishment" is Gomez, who received the official nod of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. However, Lopez was born in the district and has been active in the district's politics for decades, serving on commissions and President of a Neighborhood Council that was in the district when it was the 45th Assembly District.

Clearly Hans Johnson, Lopez's campaign manager (and partner) is capable of doing the math, because he and campaign manager Miguel Cordova sees a route to victory in November by coalescing the 62.5% that did not vote for Gomez in the primary into general election support for Lopez. To that end, the recent announcement that Chavez is endorsing Lopez and strongly urging his voters to support him is key:

Our 51st District is my home. Here is where I have grown up, devoted my career in public service, and raised my family. These are very special neighborhoods, sustained by the hard work and aspirations of people who come from different backgrounds but share a love of our community.
Now, at a crucial moment in our city and our state, we need the best possible leadership in Sacramento. I am proud to endorse Luis Lopez to be our assembly member. Luis is a homegrown leader of the highest standards, a unifying and effective advocate from and for our communities, for healthcare, education, good jobs and workforce training, for parks and protection of our environment, for immigrant families and full equality under law.
My own push for the legislature formally ends today. But the vision, vigor, and spirit of my effort carry on in the campaign of Luis Lopez. Together we stand, and together we go forward. I urge all of my supporters to devote their energy and financial support, their heart and soul and voice to his campaign. Working as one, we will ensure that Luis Lopez wins November 6th and is our next Assemblymember.
Of course, it's easier said than done to make sure that all of Chavez's support actually does turn out and vote for Lopez. Even if they did, that would only constitute 47.8% of the primary vote. So, then the question is, where are Richard Frieberg's voters going to go?

If Lopez does win in November, he could be part of the largest LGBT Legislative Caucus in history, with potentially NINE openly LGBT members of the California Assembly and Senate.
California and Maryland both currently have eight openly LGBT state legislators. While this is Christine Kehoe’s last year in the California State Senate due to term limits, the election of Susan Eggman (State Assembly, District 13) and Luis Lopez (State Assembly, District 51) in November would make California’s LGBT Caucus the largest ever.
Also victorious in their California state legislative primaries last night were incumbents Tom Ammiano (State Assembly, District 17), Toni Atkins (State Assembly, District 78), Richard Gordon (State Assembly, District 24),Ricardo Lara (State Senate, District 33), Mark Leno (State Senate, District 11), John A. Pérez (State Assembly, District 53), and Cathleen Galgiani (pictured), who is currently in the State Assembly and running for State Senate, District 5.
One openly LGBT candidate who will not be joining the California Assembly is Torie Osborn, who placed a very close third in a hotly contested and controversial race in the 50th Assembly District which split the gay male and lesbian communities down the middle. The gay men were in general supporting straight ally  Assemblymember Betsy Butler (and Equality California  board member) while the lesbians were working for openly lesbian Osborn. The 51st assmebly district includes much of  "Boystown" (a.k.a. West Hollywood) as well as the People's Republic of Santa Monica ("Home of the Homeless!") as well as parts of Bel Air. There were four main candidates and " Let's do the results ended up with barely 1,000 votes separating the 1st finisher from the 4th finisher (Butler: 15,362; Mayor of Santa Monica Richard Bloom: 15,087; Osborn: 14,458; Republican Brady Torgan: 14,340). In fact, they are still counting the cotes, but it is unlikely that the Top 2 finishers will change. Note that the turnout in the 50th was almost twice what it was in the 51st. Openly gay Speaker of the Assembly John Perez poured money into this race to get Butler re-elected. She had decided to move into this district instead of staying in the district where her previous residence was (in the former AD-53, before redistricting) but that new district has far more Republicans than the new AD-50. Even, so, Butler may have a tough campaign ahead of her to overcome Bloom in November.

MOVIE REVIEW: Prometheus

One of my most anticipated films of summer 2012 was Ridley Scott's foray back into science fiction after a near-30-year hiatus,  Prometheus, also known as the "Alien prequel." The film stars Oscar-winner Charlize Theron in her second tentpole film of summer 2012 (the first being the widely panned Snow White and the Huntsman, but more about that film later), Oscar-nominee Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce. The screenplay is credited to Jon Spaight and Damon Lindelof (former showrunner of Lost).

The reaction to the film has been somewhat mixed, primarily due to the somewhat overheated hype prior to its release as people tried to compare the new movie relative to Alien, which is currently #42 on the IMDB list of Top 250 movies of all time. Unfortunately, it doesn't appears as if Prometheus will be joining that list anytime soon.

I saw and heard the somewhat mixed reviews (currently in the mid 70s on rottentomatoes.com) before I went and saw the movie, but made the decision to just go by myself after the Men's Final was unable to be completed due to rain on Sunday June 10th

My first reaction to the film is that it is absolutely beautifully shot, one of the most cinematographically stunning films since probably Inception. It also is able to scare, excite and surprise the audience. It also is very frustrating because there are many, many aspects of the script and story which simply do not make any sense. There's a difference between leading the audience by the nose by blatantly depicting plot points with no subtlety and being deliberately obfuscatory and confusing by having characters do things which are just clearly stupid and unmotivated. This results in numerous questions being left in the audience's mind when they leave the theater, but not in a good way of "let's debate the various interpretations of what the film makers intended or speculate on what happens next to the characters that we care about" (which is what happened to me after watching Incendies or A Separation) but more like "what the ...."?

I won't go into the details of the specific questions that can be asked, because I don't want to spoil the movie for people who have not seen it yet, and I do think that it is worth seeing, especially for the visuals, which are truly astonishing. In addition, although the script is a hot mess, it does it atleast provide some fodder for how the entire Alien franchise was started, and in my book, that is worth the price of admission.

For people who are science-oriented or who have advanced degrees or extensive training in a scientific field, it will be hard to watch what can only be described as an irresponsible depiction of scientists. The scientists are played with religious fervor by Rapace and with reckless abandon by hottie Joshua Logan-Marshall. With that caveat, I would still encourage people to see the film.

Nadal Beat By Kohlschreiber; Federer Survives Raonic

Just days after winning his record 7th French Open title, World #2 Rafael Nadal was upset in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open grasscourt tournament in Halle, Germany by defending champion (and native son) Philip Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-4.

In another quarterfinal, Roger Federer keps his hopes of a 6th title in Halle alive by surviving a 3rd set tiebreak against big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3). Federer will face Mikhail Youzhny in one semifinal while Kohlschreiber faces the winner of the showdown between Tomas Berdych and Tommy Haas.

I smell a Federer-Berdych final on Sunday...

Celebrity Friday: Elizabeth Warren Supports Marriage Equality

Harvard Law Professor and U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren was at the Netroots Nation conference in Providence, RI last weekend and was asked about marriage equality by Salon magazine:

Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is thrilled about President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality, but she wants him and the Democratic Party to go even farther and push for a national law guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage for all Americans.
In an interview with Salon at Netroots Nation in Providence, Rhode Island, Warren said she supported a federal marriage equality law, which is farther than others in the party have been willing to go. “Yes, I believe in marriage equality. Done. Game. Set. Match,” she replied.

Way to go, Elizabeth!

Support For Marriage Equality in UK Hits 71%!

According to the Pink Paper, a recent poll demonstrates that the British public overwhelming supports the move towards marriage equality championed by Tory Prime Minister David Cameron.

Respondents were asked to what extent they supported the idea: “The Government intends to extend the legal form and name of civil marriage to same-sex couples.” 71 percent were in favour of the move.
YouGov surveyed 2,074 adults in England, Scotland and Wales online between 25th November and 5th December last year.
The poll revealed that three in five people believed there was public prejudice against Britain’s 3.7 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
The poll was part of an extensive report on attitudes towards LGBT people in Great Britain entitled Living Together issued by Britain's national LGBT advocacy organization (or organisation?) Stonewall in time for pride.

(UPDATED) Black, Lesbian, Veteran, Pastor Wins NV Primary

Patricia Spearman has (and has had) lots of titles: Minister, Military Policeman, Veteran, Black Lesbian. But after, Nevada's Primary Election on Tuesday, she will soon have another: State Senator. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal:
Progressive Democrat Patricia Spearman scored an upset victory Tuesday over two-term incumbent state Sen. John Lee in the Senate District 1 primary.
Backed by liberal-leaning groups, Spearman, who is black, gay and an evangelist minister, had attacked Lee for being too moderate and not doing enough to help constituents. She picked up 63 percent of the vote, compared with 37 percent for Lee, a 15-year legislator.
"This was a victory for the people," said Spearman, who is expected to win the Democrat-dominated district in North Las Vegas in November. "I am so humbled by the people's response and the confidence they placed in me. I commend my opponent for a spirited campaign and wish him the best in his future."
Spearman became the first openly lesbian person elected to state office in Nevada, and one of the very few openly LGBT and African-American people elected to a state legislative seat in United States' history! She would be the 4th openly lesbian, Black legislator to be serving, after Mary Washington in Maryland and Simone Bell and Keisha Waites in Georgia. Marcus Randall of North Carolina, Rashad Taylor of Georgia and Gordon Fox of Rhode Island are the only openly gay Black men currently serving in state legislatures.

UPDATED 06/14/2012 08:01

Daily Kos Elections points me to some more information about Spearman's astonishing win: She was out-raised by a 15:1 ratio and her opponent had the endorsement of Nevada's top Democrat, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The Las Vegas Sun reports:

Democratic state Sen. John Lee was defeated in a stunning upset Tuesday by political newcomer Patricia Spearman despite having a huge money advantage and the backing of the Democratic establishment.
With about 90 percent of the precincts reporting in Senate District 1, Spearman, a gay minister, had more than 60 percent of the vote to top the incumbent from North Las Vegas,
Lee raised more than $200,000 for his re-election bid, dwarfing Spearman's estimated $13,000 fund-raising take.
But he was targeted by environmentalists and conservationists upset over Lee's sponsorship of 2011 bill that paved the way for Nevada to withdraw from a partnership with California that governs development and environmental regulations at Lake Tahoe.
Lee, who has served in the Senate since 2004, also ran afoul of the more liberal members of the Democratic Party for opposing a 2009 domestic partnership law that extended rights to cohabitating gay and heterosexual couples. Lee also opposed a failed Democratic plan last year to raise taxes.
Wow, what a piece of work: an anti-gay, anti-environment, anti-tax corporate Democrat gets taken out by a progressive, openly gay female minister! LOVE THIS!

BOOK REVIEW: The Cold Commands by Richard K. Morgan

I spent most of my year-end holidays with my nose in the new book by Richard K. Morgan, one of my new favorite British speculative fiction authors. The Cold Commands is the second book in what he is calling his A Land Fit For Heroes series, which began with 2009's The Steel Remains (see MadProfessah's A review).

Morgan is most well-known for his "carbon-dark noir" Takeshi Kovacs novels (Altered Carbon, Broken Angels and Woken Furies) as well other award-winning hard sci-fi works such as Thirteen and Market Forces. I loved the Takeshi Kovacs novels so much that I read  The Steel Remains without even realizing that it would have a special appeal to an openly gay fan of science fiction and fantasy books.

Morgan jolted the fantasy world with his first entry in the A Land Fit For Heroes series when he not only made two of the three main characters in the series openly gay (or lesbian) but also included explicit homosexual sex scenes between the primary male "hero" and the primary male "villain" in The Steel Remains. This was just one of many ways in which Morgan signaled that he wanted to make his first fantasy series something completely different from the swords and sorcery sub-genre, even though his book does contain a lot of swords and plenty of sorcery. It also contains, profanity, explicit sex, stomach-churning violence and breathtaking suspense.

In The Cold Commands the protagonists from the first book return, characters who are as nuanced and well-crafted as before. First in line is Ringil Eskiath, the openly gay, disgraced scion of the upper class Eskiath family who is also a fierce and feared warrior; Egar the Dragonbane, a huge blonde chief from a nomadic tribe of warriors called the Majak who is famous for killing a dragon; and Archeth Indamaninarmal, the half-alien child of immortal parents who also happens to be addicted to drugs and somewhat conflicted about her lesbian sexuality. The trio have been in several tough battles together, including several that are detailed in both The Steel Remains and The Cold Commands.

I don't want to go in to too much detail about the plot or story of The Cold Commands except to say that the events happen about one year after the events in The Steel Remains and that one should definitely read them in the correct chronological order. There are several reviews of  The Cold Commands around the web which can give you a good sense of what the book is about.

If you liked any of Morgan's hard sci-fi and enjoy the modern fantasy of people like Joe Abercrombie  and Scott Lynch, you should check out Morgan's books in the A Land Fit For Heroes books.

(UPDATED) Happy Pride Message from Israeli Defense Forces

The above picture was posted to the official Facebook page of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) with the caption: "It's Pride Month. Did you know that the IDF treats all of its soldiers equally?"

The ball's in your court, Pentagon!

Hat/tip Joe.My.God

UPDATE 06/13/2012 14:43
Joe.My.God has since reported that the above photo was "staged" by the IDF and that the two guys holding hands are not a couple, and one of them is not even gay! The Times of Israel has the dish:

The newly hip, multimedia-savvy IDF Spokesperson’s Office posted Monday on its Facebook page a photo of two ostensibly gay soldiers, one seeming to belong to the Givati Brigade and the other to the Artillery Corps, holding hands and walking on a city street.
In fact, the two soldiers in the photo are not a couple, only one of the two is gay, and both the soldiers serve in the IDF Spokesperson’s Office.
The picture appears to have been taken on Itamar Ben Avi street in Tel Aviv, around the corner from the Spokesperson’s Office headquarters.
Contacted by The Times of Israel, the IDF Spokesperson’s Office did not deny the photo was staged, offering the following statement: “The photo reflects the IDF’s open minded attitude towards soldiers of all sexual orientations. The IDF respects the privacy of the soldiers featured in the photograph, and will not comment on their identities.”
The photo has garnered thousands of “likes” on Facebook and has been hailed by the Foreign Ministry as evidence of the Israeli army’s unique tolerance toward homosexuality.
What do you think? Does it matter that the picture was part of a marketing campaign and is not of a real gay couple? To me, the more important point is that IDF is deliberately trying to market itself as a tolerant organization, one that would recognize gay pride. There is a question if they are so tolerant why couldn't they find an actual gay couple to pose for the photo. So maybe IDF is trying to claim they are gay-tolerant when they actually aren't?

GODLESS WEDNESDAY: "Faith-healing" Parents Who Watched Son Die Avoid Jail Time

17-year-old Zachary Swezey is dead because his parents
believed faith could heal his appendicitis. It didn't.
This is a jaw-droppingly nauseating story about the real-life deadly effects of belief in "God." In Okanogan, Washington two parents Greg and JaLea Swezey were charged but ultimately acquitted in the death of the 17-year-old son from a ruptured appendix (what an awfully painful way to die!)

Friendly Atheist has the perfect reaction:
Imagine this scenario: A father and mother take their child to a park and the child falls into a lake. The parents can swim, but their child cannot. Despite this, they do nothing and watch the child drown.
What should happen to the parents? Immediate arrest? Removal of all their other children? Jail time for manslaughter? Some combination of those options?
How about letting them take advantage of a law that allows them to let their children die and a plea deal that allows them to avoid prison?
Insane? Yes.
Immoral? Absolutely.
Washington State has a law (RCW 9A.42.005) that allows treatment by a “duly accredited Christian Science practitioner in lieu of medical care” but the Swezeys are members of the Church of the First Born, not Christian Scientists. The Swezeys have now accepted plea deals which will allow them to completely avoid jail time for their complicit inaction which resulted in the death of their child.

The Swezeys were acquitted of second-degree murder after a four-day trial in mid-May, but the jury could not agree on whether the Carlton couple should be convicted of second-degree manslaughter.
On Thursday, rather than face a retrial on manslaughter charges, JaLea Swezey pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal mistreatment on Thursday, and Greg Swezey signed papers agreeing to plead guilty to the same crime after two years, if he follows court orders and commits no felonies during that time.

The bizarre part is that the attorneys for the Swezey wanted to appeal the ruling to get the exemption in the law that only applies to Chistian Scientists to apply all religious people who want to use faith instead of medical treatment.

Back to Friendly Atheist:
I agree the law should be changed, but in the other direction.
This monstrous carve-out must be wiped out. Religious exemptions are bad. Religious exemptions that cost children their lives are an outrage to human decency.
What he said.

2012 FRENCH OPEN: Final Thoughts and Review

The 2012 French Open at Roland Garros is now complete, with champions Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal revelling in their titles. This French Open concluded with historic wins on both the men's and women's sides. Sharapova completed the career grand slam, and Nadal won his record 7th French Open. Sharapova became the 6th female player to reach the career slam and Nadal is the only player to ever win 7 French Open titles.

As we end the clay court slam in Paris and focus our attention to the grass court slam in London I want to review the tournament and post some final thoughts.

Most Surprising Result
In 46 1st round matches at a major tournament, Serena Williams had never lost. But, in her 47th appearance, on her weakest surface, playing a hometown favorite in Virginia Razzano Serena lost a dramatic 3-set match which will reverberate through women's tennis for quite awhile. Even though she does not have the top ranking because she generally doesn't focus in the non-slam tour events, when Serena is fit and entered into a slam, it is hard t bet against her. So the 1st round loss shows that as she reaches the twilight of her career at age 30, Serena will have some unpleasant surprise results.

Best Match of the Tournament
The quarterfinal encounter between Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will go down as the match of the tournament. Djokovic saved 4 match points, and came back from the literal brink of defeat to win in 5-sets, just 1 round after he had played some of his worst tennis in a year to survive another 5-set match against calm journeyman Andrea Seppi.

Dark Horse Breakthrough
Sara Errani of Italy had been playing some inspired tennis all year long, winning 5 doubles and 3 singles titles before Roland Garros, 2 of which were on clay. But no one (probably not even Errani herself!) expected her to match the feat of her countrywoman Francesco Shiavone and reach the final of Roland Garros. With her appearance, Errani becomes only the 3rd Italian player ever to reach the Top 10 of the WTA rankings (after Schiavone and Flavia Penneta). And she picked up another title by winning the doubles!

Williams Sisters Qualify For London Olympics

With the publication of the latest WTA rankings on Monday, the composition of the United States Olympic Team members who will be participating in tennis became clearer. The Top 56 players are automatically eligible to play at the London Olympics (which starts July 24th at the All-England Tennis Club in Wimbledon). 3-time Gold Medallist Venus Williams, 31, is now ranked #47, so she automatically qualifies, as does her 30-year-old sister Serena Williams, who is ranked at #6. Each country gets 4 singles players, so the other members of the team are expected to be Christina McHale (who is ranked #29) and Varvara Lepchenko at #52. Teen phenom Sloane Stephens may have to wait her turn for the Rio Olympics in 2016. There are also 8 "wild cards" so Stephens still has a chance to represent her country in London  but Vania King at #59 probably does not.

On the men's side, the ATP rankings indicate that Team USA is most likely going to include John Isner(#10), Andy Roddick, (#32) Donald Young (#48),  and Ryan Harrison (#52). #12 Mardy Fish has announced that he is not playing due to his recent medical situation with his heart.

There are also doubles teams (women's, men's and mixed) from each country. Obviously Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond and Bob and Mike Bryan will be included, but the mixed doubles team has to come from the people who qualify for singles. That has lead to an awful lot of speculation about who will be playing with  Serena: Isner, one of the Bryan brothers, or Roddick? Serena tried playing with lefty Bob Bryan in Paris and they lost in the first round. It will be interesting to see who she played the Wimbledon mixed doubles with. Obviously, she'll play the doubles with Venus.

As predictedRafael Nadal won his 7th French Open title and 11th career major title by defeating 5-time major champion Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-3 2-6 7-5 by coming back  to finish the job 18 hours after play was suspended after the 3rd game of the 4th set with Djokovic up a break.

As in the 1st and 2nd sets, Nadal broke in the first game of play on Monday, although he was extremely lucky when his ball clipped the net and dribbled over to the other side of the net forcing Djokovic to hit the ball with no pace and setting up an easy crosscourt backhand passing shot to even the match. The court was much drier and Nadal's ball was bouncing up high on the court while the Spaniard was slamming the ball within centimeters of the lines. However, then it started raining and Djokovic was able to hang with Nadal through long rallies, but (ominously) he was unable to have an impact on Nadal's service games. Eventually, after 49 minutes of play Nadal earned a breakpoint in the 12th game at 30-40 on Djokovic's serve and the World #1 crumbled and the match ended with a double fault.

With his win, Nadal became the first man to win 7 singles titles at Roland Garros, surpassing the great Bjorn Borg. By winning this 33rd match against Djokovic, he improved to a 19-14 edge, and has now won 3 championship matches in a row (all on clay) after losing 7 consecutive finals (including 3 major titles). Nadal is now 11-5 in major final and is only 5 behind the all-time leader,Roger Federer, while at 26 he is nearly 5 years younger. There's almost no question that Nadal will win more French Open titles, the question is how many more can he win on the other surfaces? Only time will tell whose name will end up being more prominent in the history books.
