Well, well, looks like 2013 could become a very interesting year indeed! For the first time in thei last nine meetings, World #1 Victoria Azarenka was able to defeat Serena Williams, beating her 7-6(6) 2-6 6-3 in the final of the Qatar Total Open in Doha. Serena, who will reclaim the World #1 title from Azarenka on Monday despite her loss, still leads their career head-to-head 11-2, but this loss should make her realize that she is going to need her best tennis in order to continue to dominate her rivals at the top of the women's game.
Azarenka's win extends her 2013 winning streak to 14 matches, and is now more than halfway to reaching her 2012 winning streak of consecutive 26 matches.
This year, however, Serena is more engaged on tour and both players have entered the Dubai Duty Free Open which starts on Monday. Azarenka held the #1 ranking for 51 weeks, I seriously doubt Serena will hold it that long.
