Today is June 26, which is an auspicious day for LGBT equality in the United States. In 2003, the Supreme Court finally affirmed the basic humanity of LGBT citizens and eliminated the remaining state laws banning sodomy in
Lawrence v. Texas; In 2013, the state struck down the odious Defense of Marriage Act which had prohibited the federal government from recognizing legal same-sex marriages in
United States v. Edith Windsor and also ruled in
Hollingsworth v. Perry that
California's Proposition 8 was unconstitutional; in 2015's
Obergefell v. Hodges the Supreme Court struck down all state-based bans on recognition of same-sex marriage (including California's Proposition 8) effectively legalizing marriage equality nationwide! (A curious fact is that all of these LGBT-supportive decisions were written by
Anthony Kennedy, a Reagan appointee and Republican conservative jurist.)
