Los Angeles Assemblyperson
Karen Bass (
D-47)
was
unanimously elected Speaker-Elect of the California Assembly on Thursday by the Democratic Caucus. When she assumes the office later this year after Speaker
Fabian Nuñez retires, Bass will become the
first African American woman to head a legislative body. She will be the second African American (after
Willie Brown) and the second woman (after Republican
Doris Allen) to hold the second most important role in California government.
(And, yes, Karen Bass is supporting
Barack Obabam for President.)
